Is Mindfulness Even Biblical?
Are you longing for some peace and happiness in your daily Life?
On the surface, a simple definition of Mindfulness seems like a great idea for calming oneself, and there are a lot of physical health benefits. Christians can do some meditation exercises - we are still in human bodies.
But in every moment you are also in Christ. He is with you.
One Definition of Mindfulness: is a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. *Google’s English dictionary.
Used as a therapeutic technique to explore why you have specific thoughts and do they cause certain feelings in your body, ex: tightness in the chest, butterflies, hot flashes, etc.
You can discover and become aware of old memories, thoughts, or habits that trigger and cause you bodily and emotional harm. Then you talk to Father about them. He is the wonderful Counselor. Isaiah 9:6 You must be honest; Dad can take it. He wants you to give them to Him so he can exchange them!
Isaiah 9:6 … And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor …
The talking to Dad part is what will eventually cause you more happiness. The Holy Spirit will show you areas where He cared for you when you thought He did not care.
BTW, that’s why there is pain. You believed something that is not true. The Truth will set you free. Who you are in Christ agrees with everything the Holy Spirit teaches you!
But if you are looking to be happy apart from Father God then mindfulness is not for you.
Just Below The Surface
However, a slightly deeper dive into the origins of Mindfulness will uncover an intention for its practitioners to become one with a particular object or activity for the duration of the exercise. The point and path of original Mindfulness are to create a self/world without suffering - without God’s Plan. John 16:33
As a Christian, you are already united with Christ. You don’t have any spiritual needs in Christ, and the old self is dead, so any needs you may feel are leftovers from the old self. There is suffering in this world that is fallen apart from God. Ephesians 1:3
John 16:33 NLT - I have told you all this so you may have peace in Me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart; I have overcome the world.
Ephesians 1:3 (ASV) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ:
Sometimes we Christians feel disconnected from our Father, God. Fact: We are always in Christ, and He is in us. In that sense, being mindful of that fact and focusing on it will cause true joy and happiness to rise in you. 1 Corinthians 6:19
1 Corinthians 6:19 Have you forgotten that your body is now the sacred temple of the Spirit of Holiness, who lives in you? You no longer belong to yourself, for the gift of God, the Holy Spirit, lives inside you …
So Now What?
The main attraction of Mindfulness is the ability to feel better and get your life right and on track without God. However, you are right with God; the exercises I’ll provide below could benefit your mind and body.
Modern Mindfulness seems to be based on the original purpose and practice and has somewhat evolved into a helpful health practice.
You can always pray about it. Please do.
Being mindful of a simple -pray without ceasing- attitude while discovering buried emotions or connecting better with your body will help you learn and make sense of your identity in Christ and create new happiness for you! Don’t delay!
